Maine Inside Out (MIO) has offered arts-based programs at Maine’s juvenile detention facility, Long Creek Youth Development Center (LCYDC), for the past ten years, working with more than 300 youth incarcerated at the facility to create and share powerful original theater inside LCYDC and in communities across the state. Since 2014, MIO has offered community-based programs to improve outcomes for youth returning home after incarceration, through meaningful community engagement, peer and adult support, leadership development and practical skill-building. Maine Inside Out performances have been shared with thousands of audience members in diverse venues across the state and the nation, including traditional arts spaces, professional conferences, colleges and universities, high schools and middle schools, the State House in Augusta and most recently, Capitol Hill in Washington DC and the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor.
